COUPE D’HÉBÉ – pink historic Bourbon rose - Laffay

Let COUPE D’HÉBÉ bring a sense of timeless elegance to your coastal or town garden with its classic Bourbon charm and richly perfumed, medium-pink blooms that soften to shell-pink in the sun. This tall, graceful shrub-climber is ideal where you need gentle screening and a romantic backdrop for tea on a sheltered veranda, coping steadily with blustery weather and careful water management in heavier soils. Its vigorous, upright growth soon clothes arches, railings or a boundary fence, while dense foliage offers useful privacy in small family gardens. The exceptionally strong rose fragrance adds a luxurious note on warm evenings, and remontant flowering gives repeat flushes through summer. As an own-root plant it establishes for the long term, building roots in year one, confident framework in year two and full ornamental impact by year three, with reliable regeneration after pruning or coastal winds.

Usage options

Target area Reasoning
Coastal veranda windbreak The tall, climbing habit and dense foliage help create a semi-transparent living screen around a balcony or veranda, softening sea breezes while still letting in light and views, ideal for relaxed coastal-style tea corners for beginners.
Compact family boundary hedge Planted at hedge spacing, it forms a romantic, flowering boundary that is less formal than a clipped hedge yet still gives year-round structure and privacy, suiting busy householders who want character without constant shaping, perfect for homeowners.
Feature rose for small gardens Used as a solitary specimen, its height and repeat flowering draw the eye upwards, saving ground space while still delivering historic charm and scent, especially useful in average-sized UK gardens where every square metre counts for urbanites.
Own-root long-term planting The own-root form supports a long lifespan and even regrows reliably from the base after pruning or weather damage, giving stable ornamental value without worrying about rootstock shoots, a reassuring choice for planning-ahead gardeners.
Clay soil coastal plots Well-prepared planting holes with added drainage grit let this rose anchor securely and cope with gusty, damp conditions typical of many UK coastal gardens, helping you manage heavier soils and exposure in one planting decision for coast-dwellers.
Romantic scented seating area The very strong classic rose perfume, noticeable even from a short distance, makes it perfect beside benches or terrace tables, where a single plant can transform everyday moments into leisurely, perfumed pauses valued by sensualists.
Low-input heritage border Medium disease resistance to black spot and powdery mildew, plus moderate maintenance needs, suit gardeners wanting traditional looks without intensive spraying, fitting naturally into relaxed, cottage-style borders planned by practical beginners.
Vertical accent in mixed beds Its tall, climbing structure can be trained up an obelisk or post within a mixed border, adding height and flower clusters without taking much footprint, especially effective where you need vertical interest with reliable summer repeat for stylists.

Styling ideas

  • Coastal-Veranda Screen – Train along a balustrade in a 50–60 litre container, underplant with sea kale and blue Festuca to echo shingle tones – for lovers of breezy, seaside-inspired terraces.
  • Romantic-Arch Walkway – Plant on both sides of a metal arch, weaving stems to create a fragrant tunnel, with lavender edging for colour contrast – for homeowners creating a storybook garden entrance.
  • Heritage-Bed Accent – Place as a tall focal point among old-fashioned perennials like dwarf asters and rock cress, letting pink blooms rise above – for enthusiasts of traditional cottage borders.
  • Small-Garden Statement – Grow as a single specimen in a large pot by the front door, combining with trailing aubrieta for a soft spill over the rim – for busy urbanites wanting instant kerb appeal.
  • Scented-Tea Corner – Position near a bistro set in a sunny, sheltered nook, with pale paving and simple white containers to highlight the pink flowers – for those who unwind outdoors with a cup of tea.

Technical cultivar profile
Attribute Data
Name and registration COUPE D’HÉBÉ is a historical Bourbon shrub rose, marketed as a heritage rose by Laffay lines. It is an unregistered old variety, known in exhibitions under the ARS name Coupe d’Hébé.
Origin and breeding Raised in France around 1840 by Jean Laffay, from a Bourbon rose crossed with a Rosa chinensis hybrid, and first distributed in 1850 by Camden Park in Australia as a refined garden and park rose.
Growth and structural characteristics Strong, tall, climbing growth reaching 200–300 cm high with a 120–200 cm spread, carrying dense, lightly glossy light-green foliage on well-armed, thorny shoots that suit training on supports.
Flower morphology Medium-sized, cupped, double blooms with 26–39 petals, borne mostly solitary on stems. It is remontant, offering a main flush followed by a lighter second flowering period later in the season.
Colour data and phenology Flowers open rich mid-pink, ARS dp, RHS 68C outer, 68D inner, fading to shell-pink and soft mauve-rose tones as they mature, giving a pastel effect by full opening with gentle colour transitions.
Fragrance and aroma Classic old-rose fragrance, very strong and noticeable from a distance in still air. Ideal for scented gardens, seating areas and cut flowers when you want pronounced, traditional rose perfume.
Hip characteristics Occasional spherical hips form after flowering, 15–22 mm diameter, turning orange as they ripen, adding a modest late-season decorative element where spent blooms are not all removed.
Resistance and winter hardiness Hardy to approximately –26 to –23 °C (RHS H7, USDA 5b, Swedish zone 4). Good resistance to black spot and powdery mildew, medium rust tolerance, and moderate heat and drought tolerance.
Horticultural recommendations Suited to beds, hedging, specimen use and scented gardens. Allow 90–165 cm spacing. Prefers sun or light shade, deep soil and regular watering in dry spells, plus deadheading to tidy weak self-cleaning.

COUPE D’HÉBÉ offers tall, romantic growth, powerful fragrance and dependable repeat flowering on a long-lived own-root framework; consider it if you want lasting character with relatively little fuss.

Information about the videos
The video series is not a “seasonal showcase”; it illustrates the essence of pharmaROSA® own-root cultivation in a tangible way: how the plant is built up, what the root system is like and how the shoot system regenerates. The recordings were therefore made at different times and with plants at various stages of development, so mixed foliage levels and differing stages of growth may appear in the videos. They are not a ‘sample’ of the batch dispatched, but a visual explanation of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose available to order — typical for the given period and similar to what you can expect to receive in the parcel — is shown in the upper part of the product page.
