WHITE MAGIC™ – white bedding floribunda rose - Warriner

Planted along a shingle path or beside a veranda screen, WHITE MAGIC™ brings cool coastal freshness to family gardens with its pure white, cup-shaped blooms held in neat clusters on compact plants. Its dark, glossy foliage sets off the flowers beautifully, creating a crisp contrast that suits modern seaside-inspired spaces as well as classic beds and front-of-border edging. As an own-root rose it offers reassuring longevity, quietly rebuilding from the base if winter winds bite or stems are cut back hard, so you enjoy a stable display year after year. In larger containers of at least 40–50 litres it forms a naturally compact, low hedge-like outline that sits well on sheltered Cornish or Devon verandas, coping reliably with days of wind and rain sweeping in from the sea while staying neat and upright. The moderate self-cleaning habit keeps it looking orderly with a light deadhead, and in return it offers a generous second flush of flowers later in the season. Give it good drainage and regular watering, and over three seasons it will quietly shift from rooting in year one, to building bushy shoots in year two, to full ornamental value in year three, settling into the scene with unobtrusive coastal elegance.

Usage options

Target areaReasoning
Front-of-border bed in a family garden The compact, bushy habit and modest height make WHITE MAGIC™ ideal for the front of mixed borders where you want a clear view over the top yet a defined, low flowering line that children and pets can move around easily, especially for beginners.
Coastal-style shingle or gravel planting Snow-white clusters show up cleanly against pale shingle and driftwood, while own-root resilience and reliable regrowth help the plant recover if stems are rocked by storms, suiting informal coastal gardens and relaxed homeowners.
Larger veranda or patio containers (40–50 L+) In substantial containers with good drainage, its naturally compact outline forms a tidy, repeat-flowering accent that is easy to water and reach for light pruning, giving long seasonal interest with minimal fuss for busy urban gardeners.
Low white hedge along paths or driveways Regular spacing quickly creates a continuous ribbon of white bloom at about knee height, helping to define paths without blocking views from windows, a practical and decorative option for small and medium plots tended by time-pressed families.
Formal white bedding schemes Uniform height, dense foliage and good colour retention make this variety suitable for repeated, regular planting in symmetrical beds, where its consistent shape and tone support crisp design lines appreciated by detail-oriented garden enthusiasts.
Relaxed cut-flower picking corner Clustered sprays with double, mid-sized blooms are easy to cut for jugs indoors, and the discreet fragrance suits kitchen tables and desks, offering a steady supply of flowers through the season for creative but casual home arrangers.
Part-shaded seating areas and windbreaks Tolerant of partial shade, this rose still flowers well against fences or low screens near seating, bringing brightness to corners that miss full sun on coastal plots where steady breezes and salt-laden air are filtered before reaching relaxed owners.
Mixed planting with grasses and herbs The neat white clusters pair harmoniously with sea kale, blue Festuca and lavender, where their cool tones and similar water needs create a coherent, light-maintenance scheme that looks deliberate yet soft-edged for style-conscious coastal gardeners.

Styling ideas

  • Shingle-Ribbon – plant a narrow drift along a gravel path with sea kale and low Festuca to echo coastal dunes – ideal for seaside-inspired homeowners.
  • Veranda-Hedge – line three or four large 50 L tubs along a balustrade for a waist-high white screen – perfect for balcony and veranda gardeners.
  • Tea-Nook – group two roses with lavender and a compact spindle shrub beside a bistro set – suited to small-garden owners wanting a calm retreat.
  • White-Parterre – use repeat plantings in square or diamond beds with chives and neat edging to create a formal white garden – attractive for design-focused gardeners.
  • Soft-Drift – weave plants through ornamental grasses in a loose arc for a breezy, naturalistic feel – good for those who like relaxed, coastal-style borders.

Technical cultivar profile
ParameterData
Name and registration Floribunda bedding rose registered as JACare, marketed as WHITE MAGIC™ – white bedding floribunda rose - Warriner; ARS exhibition name ‘Class Act’, in the bedding floribunda group.
Origin and breeding Bred by William A. Warriner for Jackson & Perkins Co. in the United States from ‘Sun Flare’ × (‘Merci’ × ‘Fabergé’); registered 1987 and introduced internationally from 1989 onwards.
Awards and recognition Highly decorated floribunda with AARS winner status (1989), Portland Gold Medal and New Zealand Gold Star, plus Paris Bagatelle 2nd prize and multiple exhibition spray awards.
Growth and structural characteristics Compact, bushy rose 60–85 cm tall and 40–60 cm wide with dense, glossy dark green foliage and moderate prickles; moderate self-cleaning with some spent blooms needing removal.
Flower morphology Double, cup-shaped cluster-flowered sprays with 26–39 petals per bloom, large-flowered for a floribunda at approximately 7–10 cm, repeating freely with a plentiful later-season flush.
Colour data and phenology Snow-white petals with silky sheen; buds vivid white, opening pure white then slightly cream at the outer edges only; RHS 155C–155D; colour holds well before gently fading late on.
Fragrance and aroma Mild, discreet fragrance of classic rose character; pleasant but not overpowering, making the flowers suitable for close-up seating areas and indoor arrangements where strong scent is unwelcome.
Hip characteristics Limited hip set expected due to fully double bloom form; when present, small spherical orange-red hips about 6–10 mm in diameter provide modest late-season ornamental interest.
Resistance and winter hardiness Hardy to around −21 to −18 °C (RHS H7, USDA 6b, Swedish Zone 3) but very susceptible to black spot, mildew and rust, so regular, proactive plant protection is essential for healthy growth.
Horticultural recommendations Best in well-drained soil with regular watering in dry spells; suitable for beds, edging, hedging and large containers; partial shade tolerated, but follow a preventive spray regime in damp regions.

WHITE MAGIC™ – white bedding floribunda rose - Warriner offers compact, long-season white flowering with reliable own-root longevity, making it a thoughtful choice for low, elegant structure in family gardens and terraces.

Information about the videos
This video series is not a “seasonal showcase”, but a way to make the essence of PharmaRosa®’s own-root production tangible: how the plant is built, what the root system looks like and how the shoot system renews itself. The footage was therefore taken at different times and of plants at various stages of development, so mixed levels of foliage and differing stages of growth may appear. These clips are not a ‘sample’ of the batch delivered to you, but an illustration of how the technology works. The current condition of the rose you are purchasing – typical for the given time of year and what you can realistically expect to receive in your parcel – is shown at the top of the product page.
